On Friday, Marvelė Wastewater Treatment Company in Kaunas launched a new modern equipment to dry wastewater sludge. With this equipment wastewater will be not just purified and drained, but also dried, which will raise opportunities to use sludge more efficiently. In the future, there is a plan to use dried sludge as biofuel.
“This investment will help to make the smell from the wastewater treatment company less intensive. I really hope that soon the opportunity to use dried sludge as biofuel will became reality. This could make heating prices lower’’, – said Mayor of Kaunas city Visvaldas Matijošaitis. According to Linas Baltrėnas, General Manager of the water supply company ,,Kauno vandenys’’, this equipment will let Kaunas City create the necessary amount of wastewater sludge cleaning force which fits the EU environmental requirements. With the help of this equipment, sludge from other districts of Kaunas City, such as Birštonas, Zapyškis, Ežerėlis, Raudondvaris, Neveronys, Vilkija, Šlienava, also will be processed. “We have just opened an environmentally friendly object in Kaunas City. These devices are important for the entire region’, – said Jūratė Juozaitienė, advisor to the Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius. Marvelė Wastewater Treatment Company processes 23 million cubic metres of wastewater per year. The price of the new sludge processing devices was over 9.77 million euros. The project was funded by the Structural Funds of the European Union as well as the national budget.
