Changes in Kaunas‘ public transport

Since the beginning of New Years, the changes to public transport tickets and travel conditions came into effect in the city of Kaunas. Passengers who fail to present a valid ticket to a ticket inspector on a bus or trolleybus can now continue their journey only by paying an €8 “control fee”. The prices of tickets purchased from the driver, either in cash or by bank card, have also been adjusted. Following approval by the City Council, residents are now allowed to travel with dogs. Ukrainian refugees who fled the war continue to receive a 99% discount on public transport travel.

“Control ticket”

The City Council approved a “control ticket” in the city’s public transport. This is not a new concept in Lithuania, as similar practices are already in place in other cities across the country.

Previously traveling in Kaunas without a ticket or purchasing a ticket with a discount without being entitled to one, resulted in a fine ranging from €16 to €30.  Violators were required to leave the vehicle and, after presenting an identity document to ticket inspectors, wait while an administrative offence report was written.

Now, passengers without a valid public transport ticket will be able to avoid the standard penalty and continue their journey right after paying €8 “control fee” using a bank card or a smart device.

Changes in fares

The changes will affect payments in cash and by bank card, with ticket prices increasing from €1 to €1.50. Changes also apply to discounted tickets purchased from drivers: tickets with a 50% discount have increased from €0.50 to €0.75, while tickets with an 80% discount have risen from €0.20 to €0.30.

Public transport ticket prices in Kaunas had remained unchanged for a very long time and were among the lowest in Lithuania. The ticket prices will not change for passengers that use mobile app “Žiogas” or physical “Žiogas” card to pay for their trips.

This decision aims to encourage passengers to purchase tickets in advance via the “Žiogas” app or  physical “Žiogas” card.

A discount for Ukrainians

Following City Council approval, a 99 % discount on public transport tickets will continue to be applied next year to Ukrainian who have fled the war.

In order to get the discount, passengers will need to submit the digital temporary residence permit issued by the Migration Department, along with an ID issued by a foreign country.

Traveling with animals

Passengers will be allowed to travel with dogs on public transport free of charge outside peak hours, provided the dog is kept on a leash no longer than 0.5 meters and a vaccination passport can be provided.

Dogs must wear a muzzle, except for breeds for which muzzles are not suitable.
