Although there is still more than half a year left before the most beautiful holidays, preparation for them starts now. Kaunas City Municipality announces a public contest and is looking for an artist for one of the most important Christmas missions – to create this year’s “winter fairy tale”. Before the end of the summer, it will become clear who will create the main symbol, the Christmas tree, this year and who will organize the tree lighting ceremony as well as New Year’s celebration.

Criteria for the designers of the decorations

Contest participants can choose from three options for creating the Christmas tree: to decorate a live natural fir tree, at least 18 meters high, at least 20 meters cone-shaped structure resembling the tree decorated with natural thorn branches, or 20 meters high and higher artistic design object, of which one third would be branches of natural fir trees or other conifers.

The main evaluation criteria – aesthetics and artistic quality, contextuality, the quality of technical solutions, the price of implementing of the idea and decoration services. Sketches, illustrations or photos together with descriptions, technical parameters of decor elements and other information are welcome for submission. “Christmas is a special holiday, so we prepare responsibly. Kaunas constantly tries to surprise with unique decoration elements. Christmas tree decorations do not leave anyone indifferent year after year and are among the most beautiful ones in the world. We want to continue creating a unique Christmas mood in the city, which would delight the people of Kaunas and the guests who visit during the holidays. Therefore, we invite all creators to contribute – to offer their visions and ideas”, said Eglė Andriuškienė, deputy director of Kaunas City Municipality Administration.

Harmony of traditions and technologies

It has already become a tradition that Kaunas is one of the first cities to light the Christmas tree and on this occasion organize a festive concert in the Town Hall Square along with a live broadcast on television. After several years of quarantine challenges, it is expected that all spectators, in high spirits, will be able to enter the Town Hall this year.

According to A. Augonė, the organizers of the concert are expected to come up with authentic ideas and innovative solutions that combine the traditions of the most beautiful winter holidays with modern forms of expression. The main goal is to interest and attract the widest possible audience.

Participants of the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and New Year’s celebration contests should pay attention to high-quality professional sound, video, and lighting equipment. The ideas of Christmas tree creators and decorators are welcome until July 13, 11:00; The organizers of the concert – until August 3, 11:00.
